Investment Objectives
The investment objective of the NPI Canadian Community Development and Social Bond Fund is to provide a steady level of income and some capital appreciation while attempting to preserve capital by investing in investment-grade bonds and other debt instruments of Canadian entities that fit the Fund's socially responsible investing screening criteria.
The fund may invest up to 20% of its assets in debt instruments and other investments that promote community economic development.
Investment Strategies
The Fund invests primarily in a broad selection of fixed-income securities guaranteed by the Government of Canada, Canadian provincial and municipal governments or debt securities issued by Canadian corporations and chartered banks. This includes, but is not limited to corporate bonds, debentures, notes, zero-coupon securities, mortgage-related and other asset-backed securities, provincial bonds, obligations issued or guaranteed by agencies or instrumentalities of the Canadian Government, debt securities convertible into, or exchangeable for, common stocks, foreign debt securities, guaranteed investment contracts, income participation loans, first mortgage loans and participation certificates in pools of mortgages issued or guaranteed by agencies or instrumentalities of the Canadian Government. The fund may invest up to 10% in foreign fixed income securities.
The Fund’s investment strategy, which depends on its outlook on the economy, involves active trading of portfolio securities such as varying the sector mix, asset category and type of bond. The corporate bond component of the Fund will be managed based on a combination of macroeconomic research and fundamental analysis. The Fund invests in entities which fit its social responsibility criteria.
